I will be in Japan with my US phone (AT&T).

If I have my phone “on” while in Japan, is that considered feasible to be charged international roaming rates?

Or must I be calling someone in order to start international roaming rate charges?

Does text messaging while in Japan also warrant international roaming charges?

I’ve found that this is nowhere near enough and i work through the free minutes within a few days and work my wy through my credit at unacceptable rates.
